Abstract

This study, titled “A Study of Mizo Songs from a Postcolonial Perspective,” examines the significant transformations that occurred in Mizo culture, religion, and literature as a consequence of British colonial rule and the introduction of Christianity. It explores how the Mizo people responded to, resisted, and negotiated these cultural and ideological changes through songs and music. In particular, the study focuses on Chalmar Zai, Ramthar Zai, Kaihlek Zai, and Lengkhawm Zai as forms of musical resistance to colonialism. It also examines contemporary Mizo songs produced by the younger generation, particularly their responses to various forms of domination and their articulation of Mizo identity. The study demonstrates how Mizo songs have functioned as important cultural expressions of resistance, serving to challenge colonial influences, preserve traditional cultural values, and assert and reaffirm Mizo identity.
